Wasps are a common problem here in the Pacific Northwest, particularly in the spring and summer. Knowing about the common species in the area can help you identify infestations and get help quickly. Here are some of the most common types of wasps in the Pacific Northwest:

• Yellowjackets are some of the most common wasps in this area, and they often build nests in concealed areas such as wall voids and attics. They are relatively short and stout with black and either white or yellow coloration.
• Bald faced hornets are large and can be aggressive. They are black in color with a slightly thicker body compared to other types of wasps. Since these insects are so large, their stings can be very painful and in some cases, dangerous.
• European hornets look similar to yellowjackets, but they are much larger in size and have distinctive white facial markings. These insects are very aggressive and just passing within 10 feet of a nest could cause an attack.
• Paper wasps are most known for their unique papier-mache nests, which are generally built in an umbrella shape. Though they are the most docile of the three main social wasp species, they are still capable of delivering a painful sting.
• Mud daubers are solitary wasps that can easily be identified by their string-like waist. They are also known for building distinctive nests out of mud, which are often shaped like a series of tubes resembling organ pipes.
