Let’s Dispel Some Myths About Fire Ants

In All About Ants Pest Control, Uncategorized

When my sister and I were younger, she stepped on a fire ant hill in the yard. We lived in South Texas, and they are quite common down there. This was my introduction to fire ants, as they quickly made their way up her leg, stinging her all over. She was fine, but it was quite scary. You do have to watch out for fire ants for sure, and you might want a pest control service to help you remove ants that are causing problems. However, along with all the truths out there about fire ants and personal experiences that people have like me, come the myths.

Let’s dispel some of these myths about fire ants right quick so that you know more about these little creatures. First, they do not breathe fire. Okay, that was a little joke. I’m not sure anyone out there is going to think that. However, there are some common myths about fire ants that are always being circulated. For example, people often think since fire ants are one of the most dangerous ants and that they are quite large.

If you see large ants and suddenly think you have a fire ant infestation, you’re looking at a different type of ant. You see, I called them little creatures for a reason. Fire ants are actually quite small. Now, what are some of the other myths?

This next myth involves getting rid of fire ants. Have you heard about ways that you can get rid of them without calling an exterminator? There are certainly many home remedies that are often discussed. While some of them may be slightly effective, not all of the fire ants are going to die. Additionally, what you’re going to end up doing is making them move, and hopefully, it’s not even closer to your home than they already were.

Some people think they can simply drown the fire ants, but this just isn’t true. Do you know what they are going to do if you try to do that? They are going to cling to each other and create a ball of ants that floats quite nicely. These fire ants are survivors!

I mentioned that fire ants are very common down in South Texas. Heat is one thing that is associated with this area of the country. During the winter, temperatures can get to freezing, but they don’t stay that way for long. Besides, if you think that freezing temperatures are going to kill the fire ants, you need to know that’s not necessarily true. You see, according to one site, it not only requires freezing temperatures but temperatures under 10 degrees. Furthermore, those temperatures must persist for a couple of weeks.

There are other common myths about fire ants that you need to know. You don’t want them moving their colonies all around your yard, causing further damage. Plus, you don’t want to frustrate yourself dealing with them when all it would take is the truth. Don’t believe the myths about fire ants, and in that case, maybe it’s time to call a pest control service to remove ants from your yard for good. If you have a fire ant problem, contact All About Ants to have it taken care of today!
