Regardless of whether your own pets have become infested with fleas, or if fleas have found their way into your home by other means, when this happens the most important task at hand is how to get rid of fleas.
Manifestation of Fleas
A flea infestation is usually not hard to discover, especially if you have pets in or around your house. Frequent scratching by pets is a strong indicator that fleas may be present.
Fleas are dark in color and are very small in appearance. One flea normally measures approximately 2.5 millimeters in length. Their bodies are flat and they have very long legs that make them capable of jumping long distances.
While a single flea is not easy to see with the naked eye, a group of fleas is often easy to see on a pet, especially if the pet’s fur is light in color. Fleas will often be seen on the belly of cats or dogs.
Flea larvae are very difficult to see as the eggs are pale and only about 3 millimeters in length. The eggs can hatch within a span of time of two days to two weeks, depending upon the conditions. If the weather or indoor conditions are warm and moist, the eggs hatch quickly whereas cool, dry temperatures can cause the eggs to wait longer before hatching.

How to Get Rid of Fleas
The ease with which you can get rid of fleas depends upon several factors, including:
- The extent of the infestation
- The amount of time and energy you are willing to spend
- The assurance you need that the fleas will not come back
There are self-help measures that can help to ease the infestation, such as frequent vacuuming of furniture, carpets and pet bedding. Over-the-counter sprays and “bombs” can help to lessen the flea population as well, but must be used with care around children and pets.
The absolute best way to get rid of fleas is to call a professional exterminator. These professionals know how to treat your home to fully eradicate it of fleas as well as their eggs. Most professional exterminators will also come back and retreat if necessary at little or no additional expense within a certain time period of the first treatment.
