Common Springtime Pests in Pacific NW

In Ants, Bed Bugs, Termites, Wasps

Ants gathered in a home. Antworks, serving Portland OR and Vancouver WA talks about common springtime pests in the Pacific Northwest.Along with warmer temperatures and sunny days, spring also marks the arrival of many common springtime pests here in the Pacific Northwest. In this article, we’ll talk about which ones may bring new threats to your home and ways you can prevent an infestation.

Ants become less active in the winter so when spring arrives, they’ll emerge from their nests in search of a food source. The most common types of ants you may see are odorous house ants and carpenter ants.

  • Odorous house ants are more of a nuisance than anything. They’ll invade your home in search of food and water, then signal nestmates that they’ve struck gold.
  • Carpenter ants are generally much larger than other ants and are most active at night. They’re attracted to moist and decaying wood which they’ll excavate for nest-building.

To help deter ants, seal cracks or gaps around windows and doors, remove sources of standing water, and store food in sealed containers.

Another wood-destroying pest common during the warmer months is the termite. Termites will seek out new nesting spots to form their new colonies. They’re attracted to decaying wood and will burrow into beams, columns, and rafters, eating the cellulose in the wood.

To help deter termites from your home, ensure your gutters and downspouts are properly working, reduce the moisture in your basement, crawl space, or attic, and have a yearly termite inspection performed by a local pest control company.

Bed Bugs

Although bed bugs are a year-round pest, they’re more prevalent in the spring and summer when people travel more, giving these tiny hitchhikers more opportunity to also travel and cause infestations. Bed bugs aren’t dangerous but people who have experienced a bed bug infestation before have reported saying they experienced anxiety and PTSD-like symptoms afterward.

To avoid bed bugs when traveling, inspect your hotel room and look for any signs of bed bugs. They’re not only limited to beds. They also hide out in drawers and between sofa cushions. Next, use plastic luggage in light shades to make it harder for bed bugs to latch on to. Lastly, before heading home, wash all of your clothing, bedding, and towels in hot water to kill any bed bugs that may have hitched a ride.

Queen wasps generally emerge in the spring and start constructing new nests. Because they use wood fibers to build their nests, wasps are attracted to decks, porches, sheds, and other wooden structures. Unlike bees, wasps can be very aggressive and will not hesitate to sting.

To help avoid wasps, keep your garbage tightly sealed and don’t leave food out. Wasps are attracted to protein in the spring and early summer. You may also want to work with a pest control company to block access points around your home and offer solutions to repel them.
